In Japan, «In This Corner of the World» is considered a modern classic. It has inspired an anime film, live-action adaptations, TV series, stage productions etc.
The story moves us to 1940s Hiroshima, where we meet Suzu Urano — a dreamy and artistically gifted young woman — and follow her coming-of-age journey in the shadow of one of humanity’s greatest catastrophes.
While creating this masterpiece, author Fumiyo Kono conducted in-depth research on this complex period in Japanese history. The manga masterfully weaves together delicate artwork, historical accuracy, poignant drama, and touches of humor. It’s a story about the art of living through hardship — one that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Nearly a year has passed since Suzu married Shusaku, and she has accumulated so many questions. Did her husband truly choose her with his heart, or does he still love someone else? What is it like to have only one friend, and to find it so difficult to see her? How can she understand her own feelings when, since childhood, she has only had to submit to circumstances? Does she even belong here at all?
As 1945 approaches, the frontline city of Kure is bombed more and more frequently, and just as often Suzu feels out of place and powerless. At times, it seems that everyone would be better off if she returned to her hometown of Hiroshima, to her parents and younger sister… and the next moment she is torn between a sense of duty and the hope that she is, after all, managing to get along with those around her.
But the war imposes its own irreversible changes: it distorts some things, takes others away forever, yet amid the thunder of war one hears one’s own heart more clearly—a heart that has long since made its choice. On the ruins of her former life and her former self, Suzu begins, cautiously, to sketch out a new corner of the world—one where there may be no justice, but there is a great deal of love.
