VOLUME 1

Before the rebirth, all the spirits of the dead must first pass through the Netherworld. This is where those who weren’t afraid of sin when still alive are judged and punished. King Yama, the master of the Netherworld, sits before a high table, assigning penances that must be fulfilled before rebirth is attained. His magistrates, Black and White Impermanence, are sitting on either side of him, surrounded by the generals, Ox-Head and Horse-Face, and other demon guardians. The living are forbidden from visiting the Netherworld unless they possess a special document called a Netherwarrant. Once, a young man encounters an unusual boy wearing a mask and dressed in ancient garb. He claims he is Black Impermanence, assistant to King Yama. Within moments, the young man and the boy cross over to the Netherworld.

VOLUME 2

When the orderly life of the Netherworld was abruptly disrupted by the disappearance of King Yama, Black and White Impermanence were compelled to abandon their duties and embark on a quest to find him. Their destination was the human world, an «Island state of the East, a place of strange happenings».

Clutching at every hint of mysticism and the supernatural, the protagonists encounter not only ghosts, demons, and monsters but also discover that the human heart is the true source of strange happenings.
